After years of public sparring, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and President Donald Trump recently held a rare face-to-face meeting in the Oval Office to discuss key economic issues.
A source familiar with the matter told CNN the conversation touched on the economy, trade policy, financial regulation, and the Federal Reserve. The White House meeting, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, comes after a history of friction between two of the most influential figures in business and politics.
According to the Journal, last week’s meeting marked their second in the past two months and also included Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
In a separate exchange, Dimon reportedly defended Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, telling Trump that historical attempts to pressure the Fed into cutting interest rates often backfire.
When reached for comment, a White House spokesperson said they do not discuss private meetings that “may or may not have happened.” JPMorgan also declined to comment.
Years of Personal and Political Tension
Dimon and Trump have long been at odds—often exchanging personal barbs. In 2023, Dimon said Trump didn’t understand the debt ceiling, calling it “one more thing he doesn’t know very much about.” After Dimon encouraged business leaders to back Nikki Haley in the GOP primary, Trump fired back by calling him a “highly overrated globalist.” Back in 2018, Trump said Dimon lacked the “smarts” to be president and labeled him a “nervous mess.”
Despite that history, Dimon now appears to be taking a more diplomatic approach. When asked by CNBC about reports of improving ties, he declined to get into details but emphasized the value of dialogue.
“We reach out to the administration all the time. They reach out all the time. I think it’s a good thing,” Dimon told CNBC.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also attended last week’s Oval Office meeting between Donald Trump and Jamie Dimon, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The Journal noted that in June, Trump and Vice President JD Vance hosted Dimon at the White House.
The meetings represent a surprising shift, as Trump and Dimon reportedly hadn’t engaged in “a substantive conversation for years.”
Their relationship had long been strained, marked by what appeared to be a shared dislike for one another.
