Five weeks after Anne Burrell was found unresponsive in her New York City home, authorities have ruled her death a suicide.
The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner released a statement on July 24, confirming that the 55-year-old Food Network star died by suicide.
The medical examiner listed the cause of death as “acute intoxication due to the combined effects of diphenhydramine, ethanol, cetirizine, and amphetamine.”
On June 17, police responded to a 911 call reporting cardiac arrest at Burrell’s Brooklyn residence. Emergency medical personnel arrived to find a woman “unconscious and unresponsive” and pronounced her dead at the scene, according to the NYPD.
Later that day, Burrell’s family issued a statement confirming her death and remembering her as “a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend.”
“Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal,” the statement read.
Burrell is survived by her husband, Stuart Claxton, whom she married in 2021, his son Javier, her mother Marlene, sister Jane, and brother Ben.
A celebrated chef and bestselling cookbook author, Burrell spent two decades on the Food Network. She was best known as the host of Worst Cooks in America and made regular appearances on Chopped and Food Network Star. Most recently, she starred in the new series House of Knives, which premiered in March.
She was also a frequent guest chef on TODAY, with her final appearance airing on April 9.
“Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent — teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring,” a Food Network spokesperson said in a statement following her death.
“Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss.”
In the wake of the Worst Cooks in America host’s death, her loved ones—including husband Stuart Claxton, stepson Javier, mother Marlene and sister Jane—shared a tribute honoring all Burrell encompassed in their family and beyond.
“Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend—her smile lit up every room she entered,” her family shared with E! News in a statement. “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”
