In a clever twist of PR judo, data analytics firm Astronomer has brought on Gwyneth Paltrow as a “temporary spokesperson” following the fallout from a viral “kiss cam” moment that put the company’s leadership under intense scrutiny. Given the background of what happened to the company recently, this looks very funny.
The video, captured at a July 16 Coldplay concert, showed the now-former CEO and chief people officer cozying up before quickly ducking their heads as the camera lingered—an awkward moment that sparked online sleuthing, resignations, and plenty of speculation. Even Chris Martin chimed in from the stage, quipping, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”
Both executives—CEO Andy Byron and Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot—have since resigned. “Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability,” Astronomer said in a statement last week.
Enter Paltrow, who made a surprise appearance in a cheeky, late-night infomercial-style social media video posted Friday. “Astronomer has gotten a lot of questions over the last few days, and they wanted me to answer the most common ones,” said the Goop founder and former spouse of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin.
When one fake viewer question started with “OMG!” Paltrow cut it off with a grin: “Yes, Astronomer is the best place to run Apache Airflow.” She went on to praise the company’s data workflow automation tools and slipped in a plug for an upcoming Astronomer conference in September.
“We will now be returning to what we do best — delivering game-changing results for our customers,” Paltrow concluded with a wink.
Based in New York, Astronomer helps clients develop and optimize products through AI-driven data workflow solutions. And while the kiss cam may have briefly derailed the narrative, it seems the company is determined to turn the attention into a plot twist of its own.
