ChatGPT’s mobile app continues to dominate the AI assistant market, reaching $2 billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023, according to app intelligence provider Appfigures. That figure is roughly 30 times the combined lifetime spending of its mobile competitors, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok.

So far in 2025, the app has generated $1.35 billion, up 673% year-over-year from $174 million during the same period in 2024. On average, ChatGPT is earning nearly $193 million per month, a substantial increase from $25 million last year. By comparison, Grok—the closest competitor—has generated about $25.6 million to date, with average monthly spending around $3.6 million, or just 1.9% of ChatGPT’s total.

While these figures focus on mobile app revenue, they highlight ChatGPT’s lead among consumers, even as AI companies generate additional income through web subscriptions and API services. The data reflects how users discover and pay for AI assistants via mobile app stores, offering insight into traction with the broader public.

Grok, which launched in November 2023, initially lacked standalone iOS or Android apps, relying on the X platform (formerly Twitter) for access. Its own iOS app became available in January 2025, followed by Google Play on March 4.

Appfigures reports that ChatGPT’s lifetime spending per download is $2.91, compared with Claude at $2.55, Grok at $0.75, and Copilot at $0.28. In the U.S., per-download spending is even higher at $10, accounting for 38% of total app revenue, while Germany ranks second with 5.3%.

Download figures further underscore ChatGPT’s lead. Globally, the app has been installed an estimated 690 million times, compared with Grok’s 39.5 million. Average monthly downloads now reach roughly 45 million, up 180% from 16 million in the first seven months of 2024. In 2025 so far, the app has seen 318 million downloads, 2.8 times more than the 113 million recorded during the same period last year. By volume, India is ChatGPT’s top market, accounting for 13.7% of lifetime downloads, followed by the U.S. at 10.3%.
