Michael Baker International, in partnership with STV, has secured an order from the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) to oversee construction management and inspection services for the Francis Scott Key Bridge Reconstruction project in the US.

Last March, a cargo ship hit one of the bridge’s piers, resulting in its collapse.

This collaboration between Michael Baker, an engineering, planning, and consulting services provider, and professional services company STV will support the progressive design-build project across all construction stages.

The project is estimated to cost between $1.7bn and $1.9bn, from inception to completion.

It encompasses the replacement of the roughly 2.3-mile-long bridge that facilitates Interstate 695 traffic over the Patapsco River, connecting Baltimore County with Anne Arundel County in Maryland.

The new cable-stayed bridge, a first for Maryland's highway system, will be built to contemporary standards, for safe passage over navigable waters.

As part of CMI services, the joint venture (JV) will be MDTA's representative throughout the construction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Its responsibilities include managing traffic maintenance, conducting constructability reviews, and performing inspections, scheduling, and materials testing, among other tasks.

The bridge is expected to open in 2028.

Michael Baker International Program/Construction Management national practice lead Jeff Carpenter said: "Bridges are the backbone of our nation's infrastructure, supporting the daily travel of millions of people and the transportation of essential goods and services.

"We are proud to partner with STV and our client, MDTA, to restore this critical infrastructure component, reconnect local communities and Marylanders and boost economic growth in the region."

In May 2023, Granite received a preconstruction contract for the Parks Highway MP 319-325 project in Alaska, US.

"Michael Baker and STV JV to support Francis Scott Key Bridge Reconstruction" was originally created and published by World Construction Network, a GlobalData owned brand.
