OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate has climbed to $10 billion as of June, up sharply from $5.5 billion in December 2024, the company announced Monday. The surge reflects accelerating demand for its ChatGPT models and puts OpenAI on track to meet its ambitious full-year revenue target.
The company’s projected annual revenue, based on its current run rate, has shown significant growth from the $5.5 billion figure recorded in late 2024, underscoring the rising adoption of its AI offerings across sectors.
This trajectory supports OpenAI’s goal of reaching $12.7 billion in revenue for 2025—an internal target it had previously shared with investors.
A spokesperson confirmed the $10 billion figure does not include licensing revenue from OpenAI investor Microsoft, nor does it account for large one-off deals. CNBC was first to report the update.
Given OpenAI posted a loss of around $5 billion last year, the revenue milestone highlights just how far the company has pulled ahead in terms of commercial scale—even as competitors benefit from the broader AI boom.
Anthropic, for example, recently surpassed $3 billion in annualized revenue, fueled by strong demand from code-generation startups leveraging its models.
In March, OpenAI announced plans to raise up to $40 billion in a new funding round led by SoftBank Group (9984.T), which would value the company at $300 billion. As of the end of March, OpenAI reported having 500 million weekly active users.
Since launching ChatGPT over two years ago, OpenAI has rolled out a variety of subscription plans for both individual users and enterprise clients. As of the end of March, it counted 500 million weekly active users.
The company generates the vast majority of its revenue from consumers who pay for its products, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar said last fall, even as the artificial intelligence startup competes in a crowded market to sign up more corporate customers.
In an interview with Bloomberg TV in 2024, Friar said that roughly 75% of OpenAI’s business comes from consumer subscriptions. The company’s paid consumer plan for its chatbot ChatGPT currently starts at $20 per month.
