President Donald Trump is backing actress Sydney Sweeney as controversy swirls around her latest campaign for American Eagle jeans.
“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the HOTTEST ad out there,” Trump posted Monday on Truth Social, his social media platform. “Go get ’em Sydney.”
The president’s post came amid criticism of the campaign, which features the Euphoria star in a series of denim ads that play on the homophones “jeans” and “genes.” In one ad, Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue,” as the camera pans to her face. In another, the tagline “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Genes” is altered to read “Great Jeans.”
Critics online have accused the campaign of promoting harmful messaging. Some have drawn comparisons to eugenics—a discredited pseudoscience that claims human traits can be improved through selective breeding. Others have called the ads overly sexualized, likening them to Brooke Shields’s controversial 1980 Calvin Klein campaign, which featured the then-15-year-old actress saying, “You wanna know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing.”
American Eagle responded to the backlash on Friday via social media, writing: “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Trump, whose original post was deleted and reposted after he misspelled Sweeney’s first name as “Sidney,” later added: “Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.”
Over the weekend, several media outlets reported that Sweeney is registered as a Republican in Monroe County, Florida, where she reportedly bought a home in 2024. According to publicly available voter records reviewed by ABC News, a Sydney B. Sweeney with the same birthdate is listed as a registered Republican in Summerland Key.
Asked Sunday during a press gaggle about Sweeney’s reported political affiliation, Trump said, “Ohhhhh, now I love her ad. Is that right, is Sydney Sweeney? You’d be surprised at how many people are Republicans. That’s what I wouldn’t have known, but I’m glad you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.”
Sweeney has not publicly commented on her voter registration or the controversy surrounding the campaign. Her representatives did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment.
